The POwer of Travel

Robin Tauck & Partners provides consulting, advocacy and  keynote speeches and presentations on the “Power of Travel”  to a variety of audiences, including the World Bank, Associations and Economic Development or Government Agencies.

Travel & Tourism is the world’s largest industry, with over $6 trillion in Revenue, 235 million in workforce and an average of 9.7% of GDP. Some emerging nations now generate 30-40% of their GDP from tourism.  This is a huge “service” industry; in every country - every corner of the globe.

Most of that $6 trillion is generated as domestic tourism, but the following chart of the $1 trillion spent on international visits provides insights into which nations are the major spenders:

Tourism is now an excellent and primary source of economic development and job growth in the less developed economies of the world.  Many of the service level jobs provided by it do not get the attention of policy-makers in the US and other developed economies, but those kinds of jobs translate to subsistence for hundreds of millions of people in other countries.  For more on the economic impacts of tourism, visit: http://www.unwto.org/facts/eng/economy.htm

Enormous growth in travel & tourism: By 2020

In just our lifetime we've seen an enormous leap in tourism. In 1950 there were 25 million international visitors worldwide – that is, people traveling from one country to another. Today, over 1 billion people travel internationally per year. That number is expected to reach 1.5 billion per year by 2015. Add "domestic travel" (far larger), new mobility in China and India, and the visitation impadct is unknown. There is both great opportunity and reason for proactive planning in those projections.

Travel & Tourism has an enormous impact on the global economy. Many Travel & Tourism companies have been doing great work in support of destinations, and awareness and activity are on the rise.
